It’s widely known that memory foam has the ability mould to your body shape, giving you proper support. But many people will have already judged that memory foam is too firm after just one night’s sleep.

As it’s new and initially meant to feel firmer, we say give it a chance.

Don’t expect a memory foam mattress to be soft right away. A general rule is that memory foam mattresses need to be broken in before you get your desired comfort and plushness. The higher density of material per cubic metre may cause memory foam mattresses to need a longer break-in period.

In introducing anything new in your life (such as new people, new jobs, new shoes), an adjustment period is a must in making yourself comfortable. This means that both you and your new mattress need time and patience to adjust to each other. It takes time for great things to happen! In the end, it’ll be worth it if you end up getting a great memory foam mattress.

How Can You Make Your Mattress Softer?

For your body to get used to any mattress, it can take anytime between 2-4 weeks. Before you commit to any brand, make sure you know their terms and conditions! Here are 4 ways that may help if you want to soften your memory foam mattress quicker.

1. Simply walk it off.

With a little effort, you can gently walk on your mattress a few times a day. It doesn’t only give you an opportunity to exercise, but it’s also a proven way to soften your mattress. Another option is putting a bit of weight on the mattress. You could use filled shoe boxes or stacking hard-bound books.

2. Turn the warmth up.

Memory foam mattresses can react to body heat and mould to body shapes accordingly because they’re temperature-sensitive. In the heat they become softer and in the cold, firmer. If you bought a mattress during the winter months and can’t break into it, try turning the heat up. Your mattress should get softer in no time.

3. Sleep on it regularly.

Try and spend as much time with your new mattress even AND especially if you still find it firm. Sit, read, eat (although we don’t recommend this one) and watch TV on it. Also you should regularly sleep on it every night. Memory foam mattresses are bound to soften with body weight and temperature, so sometimes you just have to be patient and hope it’ll soften soon.

4. Top it up (with topper!)

If you still find your mattress uncomfortable after a while, maybe it’s time to think about getting a topper for some extra cushioning. You just have to make sure that it’s soft and plush, but still gives you support. A topper like the Ecosa gel memory foam topper can convert your mattress into a cloud-like haven without affecting its support.

Great Sleep Takes Time

With time, we really hope you start to appreciate the wonders of your memory foam mattress. A bit of a combination of effort and patience is involved, but it’s designed to be worth it in the end.
