Out with the old mattress and in with the new! Nothing beats the feeling of a new mattress.

But how can you say that your mattress is due for replacement? What are the signs that indicate it’s not in good condition?

If you’re reading this article, it’s most likely you’re thinking of buying a new bed to replace your old one. So if you want guidelines that will help affirm those signs that your mattress is ready for replacement, we’ve got you covered.

After all, shopping for a new mattress is not something we do on a regular basis and it’s a major purchase that should be done with careful consideration.

So before you make a  decision, here are telltale signs of an old mattress and some guidelines on what makes up the best mattress to ensure sound sleep quality.

1. It’s Too Old, or It’s Been with You for at Least Six Years.

Different mattresses have varying lifespans. This depends on the mattress type, materials used, and the total time spent in bed. But under normal conditions, it’s replaced every 6 to 8 years.

For general mattress types, here’s a rundown of how long it will last on an average:

  • Latex mattress: 15 to 25 years
  • Memory foam mattress: 8-10 years
  • Hybrid mattress: 7 to 10 years
  • Innerspring mattress: 5 to 7 years

There are mattresses now that combine the durability of natural latex and the support of pocket springs. Ecosa’s Pure Mattress is a perfect example compared to other brands that are less durable.

Ecosa’s Pure Mattress is made from all-natural latex harvested from rubber trees with no plastics or fillers added.

For other mattress brands that lack quality, you’d have to flip or rotate your mattress for proper care. But with Ecosa’s Vital Mattress, you don’t need to flip or rotate it due to its ergonomic alignment.

2. It’s Sagging with Lumps and Is Damaged with Rips and Stains.

You have to remember that the quality of your mattress makes a difference in how long it will last. The materials used for your bed influence its durability.

Cheap innerspring and poor quality all-foam mattresses are frequently the least durable, while hybrids made with premium, quality materials, and latex usually last longer.

You’ll know that a mattress has run its course with signs of wear and tear like lumps, bumps, long-lasting body impressions, and dropping edges that can be felt throughout the fabric. Those are signs of an old mattress.

Again, it’s essential to check the mattress material. A quality mattress is an investment you should carefully consider for a longer mattress lifespan. With Ecosa Mattresses, you are assured that different comfort layers are made with natural, high-quality, and sustainable materials.

3. It’s Noisier than Usual

The squeaking and creaking sound of your mattress older mattresses is a prominent sign that the foundation layers have weakened.

This sign mainly applies to spring mattresses that have coils that are starting to age. While it might be possible to fix this by tightening any bolts or box springs, you might want to reconsider because a bed that does not provide the proper support is not good for your body and will compromise a good night’s sleep.

Did you know that the Ecosa Pure Mattress has micro-coils that work more precisely than springs? This micro-coil technology provides specific support in areas where you need it most. It has thousands of individual micro coils that will mould to your body and will allow maximum contouring support for better sleep.

The Ecosa Pure Mattress also has 7 zone pocket springs. It’s basically providing seven zones of support across the body to ensure spinal alignment and reinforced edge support. Where else can you find this kind of support?

With these carefully designed materials and intricately-made comfort layers, you don’t have to worry about back pain. The best part? The squeaking sound is the very last thing you’d expect with pocket springs.

4. You Wake Up with Joint or Muscle Stiffness, and You Sleep Better Elsewhere.

Do you feel like you just had a workout upon waking up?

If you wake up stiff or sore with unexplained aches or pains in your back, sides, and shoulders, and you feel better with some stretching, then it’s a sign your bed needs replacement.

A way to gauge if the pressure relief of your mattress has degraded is if you sleep better in your friend’s house or maybe a hotel.

It can be challenging to find a comfortable position with an ageing mattress. So if another bed can support your pressure points with different sleeping positions, and you feel refreshed and relaxed upon waking up, it may be time to go mattress shopping.

5. It’s Smelly, and Your Allergies or Asthma Are Aggravated.

Imagine the build-up of dead skin cells, body oils and fluids, dust mites, mildew, fungal spores, and other allergens that your mattress has accumulated over time.

Did you know that an average used mattress hosts from 100,000 to 10 million mites? They love feasting on dead skin cells that the bed accumulates, leaving droppings that aggravate your allergies.

Vacuuming can help. But no matter how often you clean or scrub your mattress, if it’s old enough, the foul odours remain, and your allergies don’t seem to get better, getting a new mattress would be best.

6. It Has Lost Its Ability to Reduce Motion Transfer.

One of the innovative features of new mattresses compared to innerspring mattresses is their ability to reduce motion transfer.

You know it’s time for a new mattress if you feel your partner’s movement in bed. It’s a little bothersome when you become more aware of your partner’s turning and tossing or getting in and out of bed. Or maybe your bed never had the motion transfer feature at all?

One of the great things about Ecosa’s mattresses is their excellent ability to reduce motion transfer. All three types of Ecosa Mattresses can proudly claim this benefit.

  • A popular feature of memory foam is the “zero partner disturbance.” What’s great about the Ecosa Mattress is its Ergonomic Support Foam that goes beyond ensuring no partner disturbance. It also supports spine alignment and pressure points. Don’t you just want to let you and your partner sleep well through the night?
  • Pocket springs are known to move independently of each other, adjusting only to the pressure applied directly on top of it. While the Ecosa Vital Mattress has 7-zoned pocket springs, what makes it better than other brands is its Transition Foam right above it to alleviate the reactive force of the pocket springs. It further enhances the “no partner disturbance” feature of pocket springs.
  • Similarly, the Ecosa Pure Mattress is made up of 7-zoned pocket springs. But its BounceTech™ Dunlop Latex is what makes up its No Disturbance Technology, where you can have an undisturbed sleep, no matter how much you or your sleeping buddy moves in their sleep.

7. You’re Experiencing a Lifestyle Change.

Maybe your mattress is still in tip-top shape, but you’re feeling something is not right because it does not fit your new needs.

Pregnancy, weight gain, your child’s growth, or gaining a new sleeping partner are certain lifestyle changes that can lead you to purchase a new mattress.

In cases that entail a change in body weight, your mattress needs to support more than it used to, so it  needs to meet the extra demands. This is why it is important to be mindful of mattress weight limits as most standard mattresses are designed to only support the average weight.

A mattress that can withstand at least 105 kilos (230 pounds) is good enough. The Ecosa Pure Mattress is actually perfect if you need more support, as it can carry 300 kilos (or 150 kilos per side). It will help address a heavy person’s concerns about back pain or partner disturbance.

Another instance that would warrant a new mattress is discovering you have a health condition. Arthritis, sciatica, or fibromyalgia are certain conditions that require the right type of mattress and cushioning that will aid your condition.

The Ecosa Mattress has an adjustable firmness according to your comfort preference. It is engineered to support your spine’s natural alignment, allowing you to relax into a restorative speel and wake feeling pain-free and refreshed.

So what are you waiting for? A bed with the correct support and comfort will ensure you wake less and are less disturbed – everything you need to be attuned to your body for optimal sleep!
