Bed Bases

A bed base is a supportive structure that sits underneath your mattress. Various foundations are available, including box springs – an upholstered wooden base that features coils or springs, typically used with traditional innerspring mattresses; platform bases – a low bed base that supports the mattress with a solid surface or slats; slatted bases with metal or wooden slats that promote airflow, evenly distribute weight and maintain the original mattress feel; and adjustable bases that can be tilted or raised to suit the sleeper’s needs.

A bed base supports your mattress and provides stability for a comfortable night’s sleep. It also helps maintain the durability of your mattress for lasting support.

A bed base will typically last 7-20 years, depending on the type and quality. Box springs can be less durable due to wear on the springs or coils, whereas a sturdy platform or steel bed base can last up to 20 years. Following the usage and care instructions provided by your bed manufacturer is crucial for longevity.

A bed base cover is called a valance, dust ruffle or bed skirt. Sold in a range of fabrics and modern and classic designs, from structured quilting to loose linen, these are used to conceal the frame and help prevent dust from accumulating under the bed.

These can be used for aesthetics when the base is not a design feature. However, some fabric and timber bed bases – such as those in the Ecosa range – are designed to be used without a valance.

The bed base you should choose will depend on your specific mattress and style preference. For instance, foam, latex and hybrid mattresses pair well with a platform or slatted base. While a box spring is best suited to a traditional innerspring mattress.

A low bed base in timber is ideal if you favour a modern, minimalist look. Or consider an upholstered base and matching bedhead to add a splash of colour or cosy texture.

Some bed bases also come with in-built storage, which may be an appealing option if you’re short on space.
